I’ve been sick and feeling run down for the past week, but think I’m past the worst of it. With a big long run (20 miles) scheduled in a few days, is it okay to run assuming I’m feeling up for it? Sincerely, On the Mend Dear On the Mend, Sorry to hear you’ve been sick! It’s usually ok to run short and easy if you feel up for it both physically and mentally. If your body feels better but you still have no motivation to run, you probably still need a bit more time to recover.
Your first run back after being sick should definitely not be a 20miler. If you’re able to get a couple easy days in before the long run and those runs are energizing (as opposed to making you feel drained) then you can attempt the long run. Even if you feel ready for the long run, don’t commit to the full distance when you set out. Instead, take one mile at a time and see how it goes. Remember, it doesn't have to be all or nothing! Listen to your body. I think a route with loops or the option to bail early would be wise.
Sincerely, Nicole
